'We are eating healthy to help others eat'

The Scottish Government has developed a Social Enterprise Programme for school to encourage the young generation to start thinking about the social enterprise. Understanding this business model lead to the children can see the benefits of using a business approach to address social or environmental problems. This knowledge will help to maximize the potential of the Third Sector in the development, design and delivery of policy and services in Scotland.

The St. Bernard's Primary School received an award with a 'Healthy Tuck Shop' project in the Government Social Enterprise Programme in Edinburgh on last Thursday. The essence of the project was to the children have established a community interest company (CIC) inside the school. They have opened a shop, which has offered only healthy food and drink for their peers and their relatives. They did this business well. They got some profit, which was spend to feed needy people in Glasgow. They promoted their business with the following slogan: 'We are eating healthy to help others eat' With this project they could educate the stakeholders for the healthy life, received a high income, created profit and at the same time they could support the local community too. The Crookston Community Group as a partner has participated in this project. We supported the business development process with a lot of information about the third party sector in Glasgow. We invited the children to our office, explained them how important for the community to support the needy people and how they can do this job effectively. We shared our food bank and crisis food delivery experiences with the children. At the end of the project, we supported them to buy and deliver food, using their profit, for the needy people in Glasgow. Crookston Community Group was thankful for being a part of St. Bernard's Primary School's Social Enterprise work . We congratulate for Mrs Nugent, the children and the whole school for their award!
