There's nothing wrong with a bit of wonky!

As some of you might know, Morrisons recently launched a box of "wonky" veg. The box contains around 4kg of seasonal veg that's a little less than perfect - but hey, aren't we all!?

The purpose of this is mainly to reduce food waste. Morrisons says, "In a typical field of carrots, some might be mis-shapen or have ‘fangs’ and these can be difficult to sell. There are also very big carrots, small carrots and broken carrots and these can also be difficult to sell. Around 30 per cent of the carrots we buy don’t make it into Class 1 bags. The problem is not confined to carrots and is not confined to the UK. Products, such as tropical fruit, can also end up growing in unusual shapes and sizes. Morrisons is helping by selling ‘wonky’ bags of certain vegetables."

If you're veg is a little bit wonky, it will still taste great! For instance, until the late 17th century carrots were primarily purple, white or even yellow! In the 17th century, a strain of carrot was developed that contained higher amounts of beta carotene - the first orange carrot. Dutch carrot farmers started growing the new orange carrots in honor of William of Orange, and the traditional, more colorful carrots, were tossed aside for these newly fashionable orange carrots. Politics and fashion. Of course!

The real bonus of shopping in the "wonky" section is that you'll no doubt end up paying less! Not because of the nutritional quality of the produce is any less, but purely because it isn't aesthetically perfect.

If your'e making a soup of some side vegetables for your family, do you really think they'd notice if their peppers are perfectly round?

Below is a link to the Morrisons website which has a few handy recipes that you can refer to. to help you make the change to wonky and in the process you'll be helping to reduce food waste and will be saving you and your family money!
