Community Gardening with The Orchard Project

Looking to boost their connection with nature, 20 Children from our local community joined a gardener from The Orchard Project to plant trees at our Tiffin hub at 1005 Paisley Road West.

The Orchard Project runs a pioneering initiative dedicated to creating and restoring orchards in urban areas across the UK. Their mission aligns perfectly with our vision of supporting a sustainable and resilient community. Together, we have taken steps towards transforming empty land into thriving orchards that not only beautify our surroundings but also serve as hubs for biodiversity and community engagement.

20 local children joined Fergus from the Orchard Project to establish several different varieties of plants. Children had the opportunity to learn about nature and to get involved in the planting process. Not only was this a break from the routine of their school holidays, it also provided a valuable educational experience.

Fergus had this to say about the event:

“Today has been a fantastic coming together to create a new orchard for CCG Bella Rose Hall. We have had a vibrant group of children and families, as well as hard-working volunteers, all helping to plant a range of fruit trees, shrubs, herbs, and wildflower plants. In a year or two, this will be a flourishing garden.”

The value of a community garden extends far beyond its visual appeal. Trees improve local air quality and studies show that interacting with nature improves our mental health. They also provide habitats and food for various species of wildlife, developing much needed biodiversity in urban environments. With edible plants, we are not only creating green spaces but also promoting sustainable food production and encouraging healthier eating habits within our community.

Our partnership with The Orchard Project goes beyond simple gardening; it's about fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment among local residents. Through volunteer-led orchard planting events and educational workshops, we aim to involve the community at every step. By encouraging participation in these events, we are cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility among our young people. Through this work, we can create a greener, healthier, and more sustainable community for all.
